Korina Sanchez, broadcast journalist

I am mostly pleased looking back and knowing I’ve made quite a number of decisions that may have seemed such a risk at the time but turned out to be some of my best life choices. It wasn’t something my parents were particularly ecstatic about when I decided I was bored with college and suddenly stopped school just a year before graduation. I took a crash course in newscasting and radio announcing with Eddie Ilarde’s and Bobby Ledesma’s group. And then I applied with a few TV stations — landed a position at the bottom of the food chain — an editorial assistant, cutting up carbon paper and sitting by the news wire machines... sometimes volunteering to make coffee for the anchors. I worked very hard but thought it was the best job in the world.

I later went back to school while I was doing work as weather girl for the primetime newscast in MBS Channel 4 and finished college. Looking back, if I didn’t trust my instincts and refused to follow my heart, that window might not have been there and I might have been the last in a very long queue for such an opportunity. Being an undergrad, I was the youngest at the office taking it all in and learning from some of the best people in the industry so willing to teach me how it’s done.

MANILA, Philippines - After a two-year hiatus, veteran broadcast journalist Korina Sanchez is back on the airwaves as she started her new radio magazine program "Rated Korina" on DZMM 630 on Monday (January 9).

During the first part of her show, Sanchez was reunited with former radio partner Ted Failon, where she confessed to having first-day jitters after a long break from radio. "Hindi na yata ako marunong pumindot," she said, while looking at the buttons while seated in the anchor's chair.

Sanchez said the show will be an extension of her TV program "Rated K" and will feature human interest stories that are "more important than politics."

During the show, Sanchez bared some of the top New Year's resolutions in the US, which included removing debt, going cold turkey from smoking, taking care of their health and restoring relationships.

Sanchez took a break from her journalism career after getting engaged to vice-presidential bet and now Transportation and Communications Secretary Mar Roxas. She returned as one of the anchors of ABS-CBN's primetime newscast TV Patrol in 2010.

MANILA, Philippines - ‘I can’t ask for more,’ said Korina Sanchez, proud wife of DOTC Sec. Mar Roxas. ‘Year 2011 has been a good year for both of us.’

Well, especially for her.

To start off, Korina was given a Hall of Fame Award by the Catholic Mass Media Awards (CMMA) for her ABS-CBN Sunday show Rated K and for TV Patrol, the newscast that she co-hosts with Noli ‘Kabayan’ de Castro and Ted Failon (shown with Korina, top photo, with Vice Pres. Jojo Binay and Cardinal Gaudencio Rosales during the recent CMMA).

Recently, Korina was given a recognition as Amazing Alumni by her alma mater, Maryknoll (now Miriam) College Foundation (photo at center, with, from left Matec D. Villanueva, chairperson of MMCAA, the Maryknoll alumni association; Miriam College president Rosario O. Lapuz; Sr. Marissa Lichauco; and Madonna G. Tarrayo, president of MMCAA).

During the Miriam event, Korina’s 1986 batch mates (including Lynda Garcia, bottom photo, leftmost; and Olen Jalandoni, fourth from right) gave her a standing ovation. The same batch donated P1M to the deaf scholars of Miriam College (also in photo).

Well more than just one award which is a Hall of Fame.

That’s why among many, many awards, this takes the center stage on our shelves, it’s really important, and I also believe that the Hall of Fame award also allows others to come up so others can also prove themselves,” paliwanag ni Korina.

“I’ve been wanting a baby since twenty years ago. In high school, I was the one most likely to have most kids because I love children. Let’s see, God willing because I’ve worked so hard for other’s kids. So maybe He’ll bless me with at least one,” pahayag ni Korina.

“I’ve been wanting a baby since 20 years ago,” paliwanag ni Korina sa interview after the awarding, matapos hayagan niyang sinabi during her acceptance speech na umaasa siyang mabiyayaan na ng supling. “In high school, I was the one most likely to have most kids because I love children. Let’s see, God willing, because I’ve worked so hard for other’s kids. I love kids God knows that, so maybe He’ll bless me with at least one.”

Well more than just one award [which] is a Hall of Fame, I think it signifies the consistency [na] naging basehan ng pagbibigay nila ng parangal taon-taon and natutuwa naman ako kahit paano, eh nakilala ‘yung tuloy-tuloy na quality control naming mga Hall of Famers so huwag na nating isipin ang edad.”

That’s why among many, many awards, this takes the center stage on our shelves, it’s really important. And I also believe that the Hall of Fame award also allows others to come up so others can also prove themselves.”

“I believe all platforms as powerful as radio, television or print should be dedicated partially to at least to alleviation of poverty, which benefit children,” aniya.

Korina : The baby will come... definitely!

Korina: The baby will come... definitely!

The big question is WHEN?

“But definitely,” assures Korina Sanchez, “it will come.”

“It” is her much-awaited first baby with husband DOTC Sec. Mar Roxas.

“Mar and I are taking this ‘project’ seriously,” added Korina, “and we are working hard at it.”

Will it be this year (but aren’t Korina and Mar pressured since there are only two months left in the Year of the Rabbit)?

“Hmmmmm,” smiled Korina, “I have doubts. An important ‘joint project’ like that needs time.”

Then, it has to be in 2012 which happens to be the Year of the Dragon. Yes, Korina is a Dragon and three feng shui masters have told her and Mar that it will be a great — and fruitful? — year for them.

But for the baby, Korina said that 2011 is a good year for both her and Mar. No complaints, she said.

“Wala akong masabi,” she admitted, “I can’t think of anything more to ask. There was one year when everything was a challenge but this year is different. I have so much to be thankful for. God has been good to us. I hope the blessings continue to pour in.”

And that’s notwithstanding the persistent rumor that her marriage was going through rough sailing, although nobody could produce a concrete proof that Mar has an “other woman.” In the first place, he never has and will never have one.

“He’s faithful,” said somebody close to the couple. “If Mar did have an ‘other woman,’ siguro ‘yon ‘yung job niya as secretary.”

If Mar is busy with the country’s problems, Korina is herself preoccupied with her hosting job at ABS-CBN (with TV Patrol World and Rated K).

Recently, Korina was awarded as Amazing Alumni by her Maryknoll (now Miriam) College Foundation. Her batch mates gave her a standing ovation for her contributions (combining “mind and heart”) to the broadcast industry.

“There’s nothing quite like the school where you learn and make mistakes from which you learn some more. It’s a great homor to be honored by your school,” adding, “actually, I was a naughty student but I did excel in the subjects that I liked, Math not included.”

Two weeks ago, TV Patrol and Rated K won honors at the Catholic Mass Media Awards (CMMA) which elevated both shows to the Hall of Fame (having been awarded three times). At the KBP (Kapisanan ng Mga Brodkaster sa Pilipinas) Awards, Korina also won Best Newscast for her TV Patrol Weekend coverage of the beatification of the Blessed John Paul II.

“Thanks to the full support of ABS-CBN for all my efforts,” said Korina. “Mababait sa akin ang mga boss ko.”

She has achieved more for her family.

“This year, I finally invested on the long-term education of all my nephews and nieces, treated my entire family to a trip abroad, renovated our family’s ancestral home, reached my charity quota for the year and started several projects that I had put on-hold.”

Korina and Mar celebrated their second wedding anniversary last October.

With several projects over and done with, will Korina buckle down to starting her “joint project” with Mar?
“Let’s just say that the Year of the Dragon augurs well for me kasi nga Dragon ako,” she smiled. “Funfare will break the good news as soon as it happens, promise!”

MANILA, Philippines – Veteran broadcast journalist Korina Sanchez is denying reports she is pregnant.

“Mabuti pa ang Twitter buntis ako, pero sa totoong buhay hindi pa. Hindi pa talaga,” she told “The Buzz” in a taped interview.

The rumor started to spread on the Internet after Senator Panfilo Lacson asked Sanchez’s husband, Mar Roxas, during his confirmation as Transportation and Communications Secretary, if his wife is already pregnant.

“Kagagawan iyan ni Senador Ping Lacson, napagtripan yata si Mar sa kanyang confirmation,” Sanchez said. Lacson subsequently told Roxas not to answer his question.

The journalist, however, admitted she and Roxas are already consulting with doctors on the matter.

“Sinabi ko naman sa inyo, project iyan. We’re consulting doctors so malay mo talagang this year na or next year,” she said.

Sanchez and Roxas got wed at the Santo Domingo Church in Quezon City on October 27, 2009.

MANILA, Philippines - Transportation and Communications Secretary Manuel “Mar” Roxas on Wednesday breezed through a hearing of the Commission on Appointments (CA) and easily got its nod, with some lawmakers saying he can even be the country’s President.

“If Mar Roxas is qualified to run the country, then he is certainly more qualified to run a department,” Palawan Rep. Antonio Alvarez, chair of the CA’s transportation and communications committee, said before Roxas was confirmed by the bicameral body.

At the start of the CA’s hearing, Cebu Rep. Eduardo Gullas immediately recommended Roxas’ confirmation. No one objected.

The only question thrown at him during the hearing that lasted less than 15 minutes was from a friend, Sen. Panfilo Lacson, who asked in jest, “Totoo bang nagdadalang tao si Korina?”

Lacson was referring to Roxas’ wife, broadcaster Korina Sanchez. As laughter filled the hall, the senator said Roxas does not have to answer his question and then endorsed his confirmation.

Pressed by reporters for answers after the hearing, Roxas laughingly said, “We are trying very hard.”

MANILA, Philippines—It was probably the toughest question that caught Transportation Secretary Mar Roxas II speechless during his confirmation hearing at the Commission on Appointments on Wednesday.

“I have one very significant question to ask and I’d like to remind the appointee that he’s under oath,” said Senator Panfilo “Ping” Lacson.

“Here’s my question, totoo po bang nagdadalantao si Korina? (is it true that Korina is pregnant?),” Lacson asked, referring to Roxas’ wife and popular TV personality, Korina Sanchez.

Those in the room burst into laughter. It took a few seconds before Roxas could react to Lacson’s story.

And when he was about to respond, Lacson said, “Never mind, Sir. Never mind.”

It was the only question raised before Roxas’ appointment was unanimously approved by the Commission’s committee on transportation and communication.

Roxas and Sanchez married in a grandiose wedding ceremony at the Santo Domingo Church in Quezon City on October 27, 2009.

Korina Takes The Hot Seat

MANILA, Philippines – “TV Patrol” news anchor Korina Sanchez was taken aback when asked about rumors that romantically link her to news anchor Ted Failon.

“OMG. Hindi po. Best friends lang talaga kami forever,” Sanchez responded, laughing, in the “Tanong All You Can” segment of “Showbiz News Ngayon (SNN)” on July 14.

“Kasi noong nakilala ko si Ted, may asawa na siya. So hindi talaga kami nagkakatugma dahil noong siya naman ang nagbinata na ulit, may asawa na ako. Talagang hindi pinagtatagpo ng tadhana,” she further explained in jest.

Sanchez and Failon’s friendship dates back to 1995, when they hosted the public service program “Hoy Gising!” together with newscaster Henry Omaga-Diaz.

Meanwhile, with the string of rumors pertaining to her husband, Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) Secretary Mar Roxas, and their allegedly collapsing marriage, Sanchez likewise had to answer queries about what she deems the most trying thing in this very public relationship.

“The worst things have been said about me, have been said about Mar and our family. Ang pinakaimportante kasi, una alam mo kung sino ka, alam mo kung ano ang paninindigan mo, alam mo na wala kang sinasaktang tao. “Importante na mayroon kang support system tulad ng isang nagmamahal sa ‘yong asawa or pamilya,” she pointed out, somehow indirectly expressing why she remains unfazed in the midst of all the issues.

In an interview for the same show a few days earlier, the “Rated K” host addressed the intrigues that's been plaguing her two-year married life recently.

“Hanggang ngayon?” she laughed when the issue about their supposed split-up was broached. “Sabi ko nga, ‘Diyos ko talaga itong mga tsismosang inggiterang ito,’… Kung hindi kami nakikita, hiwalay na daw kami. Nung nakita na kami, nagpapanggap lang daw kami. Sabi ko, ‘Ibang klase ito, hindi na tsismis ito, kampanya na ito ng paninira.’ Alam na alam mo eh.”

The feisty news anchor also shrugged off rumors that her husband has found another love.

“Mar is a very strong and a very admirable person. Kahit na ano’ng paninira ang gawin nila sa asawa ko, sorry, one-woman man siya,” said Sanchez.

Despite all the intrigues, Sanchez has made apparent one wish: Adding a new member to their family.

“I think it’s going to take some work, maybe even a miracle. But we’re looking forward to it. Hopefully it’s going to happen soon. Girl or boy? Any,” she added in the July 15 "SNN” report.

MANILA, Philippines – It’s not everyday that an award-winning broadcast journalist like Korina Sanchez takes time to open up and share about her personal life.

However, in the “Tanong All You Can” segment of “Showbiz News Ngayon” on Thursday, Sanchez gamely faced all the questions asked by her fans.

Responding to a query, Sanchez revealed that she and her husband, Transportation and Communications Secretary Mar Roxas, are still hoping that they will be blessed with a baby in the future.

“I think it’s going to take some work, maybe even a miracle. But we’re looking forward to it. Hopefully it’s going to happen soon. Girl or boy? Any,” she said.

Sanchez was also asked about criticisms against her or her family that have affected her the most.

“The worst things have been said about me, have been said about Mar, our family. Ang pinakaimportante kasi, una alam mo kung sino ka, alam mo kung ano ang paninindigan mo, alam mo na wala kang sinasaktang tao. Importante na mayroon kang support system tulad ng isang nagmamahal sa ‘yong asawa or pamilya,” she said.

On a lighter note, Sanchez was surprised when she was asked if she and her colleague Ted Failon ever had a romantic relationship.

“OMG. Hindi po. Best friends lang talaga kami forever. Kasi noong nakilala ko si Ted may asawa na siya. So hindi talaga kami nagkakatugma dahil noong siya naman ang nagbinata na ulit, may asawa na ako. Talagang hindi pinagtatagpo ng tadhana,” Sanchez said in jest.

She also addressed the question as to how she keeps her beautiful glow. “Wala lang trying hard lang ho. You strive hard lang po,” she said.

Mar and Korina: Happy Together, Reveals Plans For A Baby

Mar and Korina: Happy Together, Reveals Plans For A Baby

MANILA, Philippines – “Honey, ang malas mo.”

This is what Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) Secretary Mar Roxas apparently told his wife, broadcast journalist Korina Sanchez, a few days ago.

When she asked why, she said he told her, “I will never leave you.”

“Sabi niya sa aking ganon, ‘You’re really stuck with me,’” Korina laughed as she shared the conversation she had with her husband to “The Buzz” in an interview held last July 5 on the set of Korina’s show, “TV Patrol.”

“Sabi nga niya minsan, depende sa mood, ‘Ang malas malas ko talaga.’ Sabi ko, ‘Bakit?’ ‘Ang malas ko, sobra kitang mahal!’ O, ‘di ba,” she proudly shared.

If there’s anything that these two have proven of late, it’s that being a very visible figure in show business does not always mean a good thing but, as it happens, so does being away from the limelight.

Married for almost two years now (since October 2009), Mar and Korina are not necessarily entertainment figures, but their marriage is just as beset with intrigues as any bona fide showbiz couple’s.

“Hanggang ngayon?” she laughed when the issue of their supposed split-up was broached. “Sabi ko nga, ‘Diyos ko talaga itong mga tsismosang inggiterang ito,’ sabi kong ganyan… Kung hindi kami nakikita, hiwalay na daw kami. Nung nakita na kami, nagpapanggap lang daw kami. Sabi ko, ‘Ibang klase ito, hindi na tsismis ito, kampanya na ito ng paninira.’ Alam na alam mo eh.”

Asked if there is truth to the rumor that she has been neglecting her husband, she replied, “Hindi totoo ‘yun! Naga-alagaan kami nang mabuting-mabuti.”

Perhaps wanting to give viewers an insight on how she really feels about Mar, she also bragged, “Oy ang gwapo ni Mar ngayon ha.” And also added that, “Nagyo-yoga kami pareho, we diet together, we talk about a lot of things together. Eh kasi nagbakasyon siya nang matagal, di ba, before going back to government. So, nag-process kami together.”

When it comes to the issue of having several women involved as the supposed reason for the rumored collapse of their marriage, Korina shared, “Oo [‘yun nga ang tsismis]… Natatawa nga ako kay Mar, sabi ko, ‘Oy, pinag-uusapan dito na hiwalay na raw tayo, unuwi ka na galing New York, akala yata nila hiwalay na talaga tayo.’ ‘Talaga?’ ‘Oo, may third party daw.’

Tapos sabi niya, ‘Talaga? Sino ‘yung lalaki?’ ‘Anong ako? Ikaw ang natsi-tsismis na may babae.’ ‘Naku,’ sabi niyang ganon, ‘’wag mo nang isipin ‘yan.’”

According to Korina, the names that have cropped up with the rumors “are really ridiculous,” alluding to people involving them in issues hurled at her and Mar.

“Kaya lang siguro, itong mga babaeng ito, dahil magaganda rin, marami ring inggit sa kanila, sinisiraan din sila, ‘di ba?”

Still, Korina pointed out that she’s not necessarily the forgiving kind. “Ako pa naman, ramdam ko pa lang sa buto ko, kahit walang ebidensiya, goodbye. Yes…”

“But he has never ever given me any reason to be jealous of anyone,” she adamantly said. “Pilit kaming pinaghihiwalay ano? Siguro kasi nakikita nila masyado kang masaya.”

Korina revealed that beyond being happy together, they hope to expand their family by having a baby.

“In the making,” she quipped. “Basta pinag-usapan na namin nang seryoso. Nasimulan na ‘yung process ng paghahanda—taking care of my body, I’ve been talking to my OB gynecologist again…”

Sharing her elation, she also said, “Nakikilig ako kasi parang wala siyang resistance sa idea, alam mo ‘yung ganon, di ba, na parang, lalaki siya na parang mapapaisip pa. Siya, go siya kaagad…

“I’m excited but you know, I don’t want to be too excited kasi I’m sure medyo mahihirapan na ako, ‘di ba?”

But despite the slight apprehension, Korina believes God will bless them. “I’ve been such a good girl, I’m sure ‘yan ang kanyang regalo sa lahat ng sakripisyo ko sa buhay ko, na bibigyan niya ako ng isang anak.”

In parting, Korina gave her husband a message: “Honey, I’m very proud of you. I’m very honored to be your wife and I will love you forever.”

Incumbent DoTC Secretary Mar Roxas and Veteran News Anchor Korina Sanchez were now being the ‘apple of the eye’ of intrigues as they face again mean rumors from their detractors.

Recent reports were alleging that Mar and Korina’s marriage went off track and now living separately.

In an interview with Korina in ABS-CBN’s talk show ‘Showbiz News Ngayon’, she shrugged off the rumors and asserted that they’re happily living together, in-love as always. She also disclosed the fact that it’s not the first time they encountered this kind of gossip and believes that someone is like doing a campaign against them.

“Pag hindi nila kami nakikita, hiwalay na daw kami. Nu’ng nakita na kami, nagpapanggap lang daw kami. Sabi ko, ibang klase ‘to. Hindi na tsismis ito, kampanya na ito ng paninira,” she said.

Korina also disproved reports that Mar has another ‘girl’ and said that they’re not taking it seriously and instead make fun and jokes out of it.

Mar (54) and Korina (46) were married for about two years and are planning to have baby but believes the process will not be that easy because of their age.

“I’ve been talking to my OB-gynecologist again. I’m sure mahihirapan na ako but I believe that God believes in me. I’ve been such a good girl, I’m sure yan ang kanyang regalo sa lahat ng sakripisyo sa buhay ko na bibigyan niya ako ng isang anak,” Sanchez said.

MANILA, Philippines – Broadcast journalist and “TV Patrol” anchor Korina Sanchez has laughed off rumors that she and her equally famous husband, Transportation and Communications Secretary Manuel “Mar” Roxas II, are now living separately.

Sanchez reiterated that they are still together and are very much in love with each other.

“Mahihirapan sila kaming paghiwalayin. Alam mo ang sabi niya sa akin noong isang araw, ‘Honey ang malas mo.’ ‘Bakit?” sabi ko. ‘I will never leave you.’ Sabi niya sa akin ganoon. ‘You’re stuck with me,’” Sanchez told “The Buzz.” “Sabi niya minsan, ‘Ang malas ko talaga.’ Sabi ko, ‘Bakit?’ ‘Malas, sobra kitang mahal.’”

The broadcast journalist said this is not the first time that they have been rumored to have ended their marriage. She pointed out that there seems to be a campaign meant to break them.

“Sabi ko nga Diyos ko talagang mga chismosang intrigerong ito. Sabi kong ganyan ‘yong hindi kami nakikita hiwalay na kami. ‘Yong nakita kami, nagpapanggap lang kami. Sabi ko ibang klase ito. Hindi na tsismis ito, kampanya na ito ng paninira,” she said.

There are speculations that Sanchez has been neglecting her husband due to her busy schedule, but the “TV Patrol” anchor denied it. “Hoy, ang gwapo ni Mar ngayon, care of (pointing to herself)... nagyo-yoga kami pareho... we talk about a lot of things together.”

As to the issue that there is a third party, Sanchez said they are not making a big deal out of it.

“Natatawa pa nga ako kay Mar. ‘Hoy, pinag-uusapan dito na hiwalay na tayo. Umuwi ka na galing New York. Akala ata nila hiwalay na talaga tayo’…. ‘My third party daw.’ Sabi niya, ‘Talaga, sino ‘yong lalaki?’ (Laughs) ‘Anong ako, ikaw ‘yong nachi-chismis na may babae,’” she said.

She added that the “names that have come up are really ridiculous.”

She also said that Roxas has never given her any reason to be jealous of anybody.

Meanwhile, Sanchez said they are already planning to have a baby. “Pinag-usapan na namin ng seryoso na simulan na ang proseso ng paghahanda. I’m taking care of my body, I’ve been talking to my OB-gynecologist again.”

Sanchez admitted that she is excited but she doesn’t want to have high hopes. “I’m sure mahihirapan na ako but I believe that God believes in me. I’ve been such a good girl, I’m sure yan ang kanyang regalo sa lahat ng sakripisyo sa buhay ko na bibigyan niya ako ng isang anak.”

She said she will always be honored to be Roxas’ wife and that she will love him forever.

MANILA, Philippines – After weathering a spate of nasty rumors in the past, newscaster Korina Sanchez is unperturbed with recent reports that she’s separated from her husband, DOTC Secretary Mar Roxas.

“‘Pag hindi nila kami nakikita, hiwalay na daw kami. Nu’ng nakita na kami, nagpapanggap lang daw kami. Sabi ko, ibang klase ‘to. Hindi na tsismis ito, kampanya na ito ng paninira,” Korina explained in an exclusive interview aired on “Showbiz News Ngayon,” July 8.

Sanchez who married Roxas on October 27, 2009, does not seem distracted by the recent gossip as “We’re very happy. We don’t fight as much as they say we do. We love each other.”

“‘Yung mga pinagdaanan namin in 2010, lalong naging malalim ang aming pagmamahalan sa isa’t isa,” she stressed.

The feisty newscaster just shrugged off rumors that her husband has found another love.

“Mar is a very strong and a very admirable person. Kahit na ano’ng paninira ang gawin nila sa asawa ko, sorry, one- woman-man siya.”

She shared that before Roxas’ appointment as Secretary of the Department of Transportation and Communications, they were able to spend some quality time together in a short vacation in Australia.

“Sabi ko, ‘O, malapit ka nang mag-back to work. So, dapat magbakasyon ka.’ Winter pa rin sa Australia. Apat na araw lang kami doon. It was worth it. We really enjoyed.”

Married for almost two years now, Sanchez shared the essence of being a married woman.

“Evolving and very nourishing sa utak, sa pag-iisip, sa kaluluwa ang isang taong nag-aasawa. So, marami kang natututunan, marami kang pinagdadaanan. Natututo kang magpakumbaba. Natututo kang sumunod. I think it’s really good. It has to be good for you," she related.
